Products You Wouldn’t Expect to Be Made from By-Products from Cattle

When you think of cattle, you probably think of either the steak you had for dinner last night or the milk you poured on your cereal this morning, but did you know the by-products from cattle have many more uses than just meat and milk? In fact, approximately51% of the cow is used for food consumption while, the hooves, skin, bones, and glands are all used in varying other ways hardly any of the animal is wasted.

Rendering plants take these parts of cattle, and separates them into fats and proteins for many unexpected uses.

Firstly, the sports industry is full of cattle products. Cow hide is used to make footballs, leather is used to make baseballs, baseball gloves, and basketballs while the intestines are utilized for ‘natural gut strings’ in tennis racquets. It takes about four cows’ guts to make only one racquet!

Processed white sugar can be decolorised using a filter that is created using bone char from cows which is sometimes referred to as ‘natural charcoal’. This means you can find these by-products in many sweets and treats containing white sugar.

Gelatin is made from rendered cattle bones and skin and is commonly found in jelly, marshmallows, and other gummy lollies, but, did you know that gelatin can also be found in film? Both photography and movies are likely to require animal products unless you go digital.

Fat from cattle can also be rendered and used in a wide variety of everyday household items, including in candles, cosmetic products, crayons, some perfumes, mouthwash, toothpaste, shaving cream and soaps.
